MLive.com asked ArtPrize 2012's Top 10 popular vote finalists to help us
share their stories and impressions about the contest.

Below are responses for Sandra Bryant, whose "Return to Eden" is outside the
Grand Rapids Public Museum.

Name: Sandra Bryant
Title of work: Return to Eden
Venue: Grand Rapids Public Museum
Voting code: 52413

Website: artprize.org/sandra-bryant/

About the artist: I have been working in glass mosaic for
the past 12 years and have created many large scale mosaic murals in Washington,
California and Missouri as well as residential and commercial commissions all
over the U.S. and fine art mosaic pieces. I work with my husband, Carl, in our home studio in Lynden, Washington.

About the art: "The Return to Eden" mosaic mural is one that
I’ve had in my head to create for many years. Its message is a one of peace and
serenity in our chaotic world, and a reminder of the perfect garden that God
intended for us. The piecing of the work took about 1,000 hours, with each piece
of glass individually shaped and the installation to the base another 10 days.

What winning would mean: The prize money would, of course,
be a blessing. We would use the funds after covering costs of the mosaic
production and tithing to finance further education and contribute time and
funds to teach others the art of mosaic.

On ArtPrize: This is my first year at ArtPrize. I’ve had the
most delightful experience with Grand Rapids, in large part because I had the
good fortune to have the best hosts you can imagine.

Danny and Pat Eckert, of Grand Rapids, hosted me for the first week while I
was installing in Grand Rapids and beyond. They have been the most hospitable
and generous of people and introduced me to friends, took me to see Lake
Michigan, drove me all over Grand Rapids to see art from previous years, the
current year venues and around your lovely city.

SHOWCASE MOSAICS WORK SELECTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY MOSAIC ART

The exhibition, Mosaic Arts International, will be on view March 1 through April 30, 2012, at the Lexington Center Museum and Gallery, Lexington, KY

Lynden, WA, February 21, 2012 – The Society of American Mosaic Art (SAMA) has selected work by Showcase Mosaics, to be included in this year’s Mosaic Arts International, an annual juried exhibition of the best in contemporary mosaic art.  The exhibition takes place at the Lexington Center Museum and Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky, March 1 through April 30, 2012.

The work accepted for the exhibition is titled “Heritage”. This piece was commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission and is installed at Nelson Elementary School in Graham, WA. There are two separate pieces to the mosaic, the first measures 78” x 388” and the second piece is 28” x 132”.  The mosaic is a depiction of the landscape and wildlife of the area as well as references to its pioneer and logging past.

Mosaic art, one of the world’s oldest art forms, is experiencing a major revival both in the United States and internationally.  Fine artists are discovering the unrivaled and compelling magnificence of the art form and material in achieving their artistic vision.

“This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to view outstanding examples of mosaic art from around the world in one venue, to allow the audience to experience the exciting ways that artists are utilizing this ancient art form with a modern and contemporary approach,” said Shug Jones, President of the SAMA Board of Trustees.  “These artists are using both traditional and non-traditional materials to really propel the art form to a degree unseen in recent history.”

At Showcase Mosaics we are a husband and wife team from Lynden, WA. And we have been creating mosaics for 10 years. As artists we are mostly self-taught and draw on the rich natural beauty of Washington State for inspiration. Our work includes fine art, custom, commissions and kitchen backsplashes as well as large scale murals. Over the last year we have installed mosaics inside 3 walls of an elevator in Wheaton, IL, in an outdoor courtyard in Los Angeles, CA and a large backsplash in a private residence in La, Jolla, CA. We also had a piece installed in Providence Regional Medical Center – Everett. You can view images of our work at www.showcasemosaics.com or contact us at info@showcasemosaics.com .

MAI features the work of 56 mosaic artists from 24 different states in the US, as well as from Turkey, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa and Israel.  A vast array of material such as smalti, glass, ceramic, and metal are featured within the works of these artists.  The exhibit includes 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional, and architectural works.  Prizes totaling $5,000 will be awarded for the best in each of these categories as well as for ‘Best in Show’.

The Society of American Mosaic Artists, a dynamic group of more than 1,200 members, is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, inspiring, and promoting excellence in mosaic arts.
